Save Money On Gas
Here are my best ways to save money on gas:
Save Money on Gas At the Pump
1. Fill up wherever you get the best deal that is a reasonable distance. If you drive too far for cheap gas, you use gas while you try to save money on gas.
2. Fill up on Wednesday. Gas prices are statistically cheaper on Wednesdays. Gas stations raise their prices on weekends because people usually fill up then more often that the middle of the week.
3. Fill up when the tank is half full/empty. The more gas in the tank, the less air in the tank. Air causes evaporation. The less air in your tank, the less the gas will evaporate.
4. Fill up your car in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Colder ground equals denser gasoline. The more dense the gasoline that you pump into your tank, the more you are getting for your money and the less that is lost to vapors.
5. Use the lowest required octane fuel for your engine.
6. Hold the gas trigger in slow mode. Most pumps have three speeds, slow, medium and fast. Holding the trigger in slow mode creates less vapors that go to waste.
7. Fill the tank all the way. This saves you extra trips and time.
8. Don’t top off your tank. The gas that you are trying to force into the tank ends up being wasted.
9. Do not fill up when a gasoline tanker is at the station dropping off gas. The old gas and new gas are all mixing together with the dirt that is on the bottom of the underground tanks. You don’t want this dirt in your engine clogging things up.
Car Tips to Save Money on Gas
10. Maintain your car. Keep the oil changed, tires inflated to the correct pressure and use a fuel injector cleaner every 3000 or so miles.
11. Take out things you don’t need in your car. Do you really need to haul around your hockey equipment year round? No. The lighter the car, the better the gas mileage. Same goes for roof racks that you aren’t using.
12. Park your car in the shade. Gas evaporates. While it won’t get sucked out of your tank, it is still present in other areas of your engine and over time, this adds up.
Driving Tips to Save Money on Gas
13. Stop driving aggressively. This will save you more than most of these tips combined.
14. Avoid stopping and braking as much as you can. Follow at a far enough distance to slow down without hitting the brakes. When you see a red light, try to slow down way in advance by taking your foot off the brake. Often the light will turn green while you pull up to the light.
15. Do not peel out of stops. Accelerate slowly.
16. Obey the speed limit.
17. Use your cruise control. Maintaining a constant, steady speed is better for your car and will save money on gas.
18. Park in the first parking spot you see. Better for your wallet and your body.
