Save Money In The Kitchen
Here are some great ideas that I have learned to save money in the kitchen and make kitchen projects easier.
Save Money Cleaning the Kitchen
Cast Iron Cookware- Use hot water to clean cast iron cookware unless seasoning the pan. Keep cookware from rusting by heating until dry on the stove after cleaning.
Copper- To clean copper cookware, spread ketchup over copper cookware and leave on for 5 minutes. Cleans copper without needing heavy scrubbing.
Clean Dishes Quickly- Keep a solution of 1 tablespoon regular dish soap to 2 cups water by the sink in a spray bottle. When you have extra dishes that won’t go in the dishwasher, spray, wash and rinse. Save money in the kitchen by using less dish washing liquid.
Clean Dishwasher- Run an empty dishwasher load with a cup of baking soda in the bottom of the washer and a cup of white vinegar placed upright in the top rack of the washer. The vinegar will eventually make it down to the baking soda, but not before cleaning the inside of the washer throughout the cycle. I got this tip from a dishwasher repairman who said that having the cup of vinegar upright makes sure that it isn’t wasted right away during the first drain cycle.
Clean Garbage Disposer- While you run your empty load to clean the dishwasher, multi-task by pouring equal parts vinegar and baking soda (about 1/2 cup each) into your garbage disposer and running the garbage disposer during the rinse cycle of the dishwasher. The dishwater will filter through the garbage disposer and wash out the baking soda and vinegar, while recycling the baking soda and vinegar from the empty dishwasher load.
Safer Drain Cleaner-
* 1 part baking soda
* 1 part white vinegar
* 1/2 used lemon
* boiling water
For an effective and safe drain cleaner, put baking soda, then vinegar and finally squeeze the lemon into the drain and wait 5 minutes. Finish with the boiling water to rinse. If you are putting the mixture into a garbage disposal, throw the 1/2 lemon in and run the disposal with the boiling water.
Save Money Organizing the Kitchen
Cabinet Refresher-Use peel and stick vinyl floor tiles to line the inside of your kitchen cabinet shelves. Cut the tiles with utility scissors to fit easily inside cabinets. These are more durable than contact paper, clean easily with a damp cloth and are pretty cheap at hardware stores.
Fresher Trash-Use a dryer sheet to freshen the bottom of the kitchen trash can. Put one in the can under the bag, so it stays in the trash can when you throw out the used trash bag.
Smashed towel rolls work great as knife sheaths. Crush the towel roll in half, then cut to fit the knife. Staple one end of the towel roll closed and you’re ready to use as a knife sheath.
Cheap Recipe Laminate- to laminate a recipe from a newspaper, lay the paper flat on a piece of clean packing tape. Fold the tape over the recipe so it covers both sides of the paper.
Easy Funnel- Make a cheap funnel by cutting the top of a plastic 2-liter soda bottle.
I hope you found my tips for saving money in the kitchen helpful.
